Yestereday marked the one-year anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004. The American India Foundation would like to remember those who so unexpectedly and tragically lost their lives in one of the deadliest disasters in modern history.
AIF established its Tsunami Relief Fund immediately after news reached the United States on the extent and breadth of damage caused by the tsunami in India. We have since raised a total of $2.1 million for tsunami-affected communities and areas. Nearly $1.5 million has been committed to various grantee organizations – 33K for emergency relief grants and the remainder for long-term rehabilitation grants. The focus of AIF’s response to complex emergencies is in long-term rehabilitation such as skills training, education and infrastructure development.
Large-scale floods in the Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu in October and November 2005 prompted us to provide our NGO partners VESA and IWDI with additional funds for relief work. These floods were the worst in several decades and adversely affected the work of our partners.
Attached is a chart detailing progress made to date on AIF’s grants to NGO partners on the ground in India. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support of our work. We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2006!
